About this puja
Kaal Sarp is a yoga read in a janam patrika when all the grahas fall between Rahu and Ketu. The shanti vidhi kept for it is one of the rites families have long brought to Trimbakeshwar.
What is performed is a naag pujan. A pratima of a serpent in silver or copper is bathed with panchamrit and worshipped while the Rudra path is recited over it, with the nine grahas worshipped on a mandal beforehand.
Trimbakeshwar is where families come for it because the mandir here is one of the twelve jyotirlingas and the Godavari rises beside it. The order of the vidhi follows the paddhati the purohits of this town keep.
When families perform it
- When a jyotishi has read the Kaal Sarp yoga in the janam patrika and advised a shanti.
- Before a wedding, a new house or another large undertaking in the family.
- On Naag Panchami, on an Amavasya, or on another tithi chosen with the purohit.
On the day
Snan at the ghat, then the sankalp spoken in your name and gotra.
Ganesh pujan and navgrah pujan, then abhishek of the naag pratima with the Rudra path.
Abhishek at the Trimbakeshwar mandir, then aarti and prasad.

What to bring and wear
- Full name, and the date, time and place of birth of the person sitting for the vidhi
- Dry clothes to change into after snan
- The husband or wife as well, if the person is married

Who sits for this puja?
The person whose patrika shows the yoga, with the spouse alongside if married. Other family members may sit nearby or simply be present.
Do I need a printed janam patrika?
The date, time and place of birth are enough to begin with. If a patrika exists, send a photo of it on WhatsApp before the day is fixed.
