Mahamrityunjay Jaap

महामृत्युंजय जाप

About this puja

The Mahamrityunjay mantra is a verse of the Rig Veda addressed to Bhagwan Shiv. The anushthan is the recitation of it to a fixed count — one and a quarter lakh is the usual one — with abhishek of the Shivling going on alongside.

A havan with the dashansh ahuti, a tenth of the count, closes the jaap as the paddhati lays down. For the larger counts several purohits recite together, so the number is completed within the days set aside.

At Trimbakeshwar it is recited before the jyotirlinga. In Nashik it is done at a hall, or at the family’s own house where there is room for the havan kund.

When families perform it

  • When a member of the family is unwell or is going through a long illness.
  • On a Shravan Monday, on Mahashivratri, or on a Pradosh.
  • When a jyotishi has advised an anushthan after reading the patrika.
  • As a sankalp a family keeps on a birthday or an anniversary.

On the day

  1. Sankalp in the name and gotra of the person, then Ganesh pujan and Kalash sthapana.

  2. The mantra recited to the count asked for, with abhishek of the Shivling alongside.

  3. Havan with the dashansh ahuti, then aarti and prasad.

Before you come

What to bring and wear

  • Name, birth details and gotra of the person for whom the sankalp is spoken
  • The jaap count, if the family has already settled on one
  • A clean change of clothes for the sankalp and the havan

Common questions

Does the family have to sit through the whole jaap?

No. The family sits for the sankalp at the start and returns for the havan and aarti at the end; the recitation in between is done by the purohits.

Can it be done in the name of a person who cannot travel?

Yes. The sankalp is spoken in their name, with their birth details and gotra, and a family member sits in their place.
