About this puja
Pitra Dosh is read in a patrika where the grahas are held to show that the rites owed to the family’s elders have been left incomplete. The vidhi kept for it is a shanti spoken in the names of those elders.
It is performed on the river ghat. Tarpan is offered with til, jal and darbha, and pind daan is placed on the darbha asan, with the sankalp spoken in whatever names the family can gather.
Families bring it to Trimbakeshwar because the Godavari rises here and the ancestral rites of this town have their own paddhati, which the purohits follow.
When families perform it
- During Pitru Paksha, the fortnight kept for the ancestors.
- On an Amavasya, and especially on Sarva Pitru Amavasya.
- When a jyotishi has read Pitra Dosh in the patrika and advised the vidhi.
- When the family knows a shraddha was never performed for an elder.

Common questions
We do not know the exact tithi of the death. Can it still be done?
Yes. Where the tithi is not known, an Amavasya or a day in Pitru Paksha is the usual choice. The day can be settled on a call.
Which member of the family should sit for it?
Usually the eldest son; where he cannot come, another son, a grandson or a close relative of the family. Tell Guruji your situation and he will say what the vidhi allows.
