About this puja
Every person is born under one of the twenty-seven nakshatras. For a few of them — Mool, Ashlesha and Jyeshtha among them, and the junction points called gandanta — the tradition lays down a shanti vidhi after the birth.
The devata belonging to that nakshatra is worshipped, the jaap laid down for it is recited, a havan is done with its samidha, and the child or the person is given abhishek towards the end.
It is performed at the family’s house in Nashik, or at Trimbakeshwar where the family would rather have it done there.
When families perform it
- Soon after a birth, where the child’s nakshatra is one for which the tradition lays down a shanti.
- On a day advised for that nakshatra, often within the first year.
- For an adult, where the nakshatra has only been worked out later in life.
On the day
Sankalp in the name of the child or person, then Ganesh pujan and Kalash sthapana.
Pujan of the devata of that nakshatra, then the jaap laid down for it.
Havan with its samidha, abhishek of the person, then aarti and prasad.

Common questions
At what age is this done for a child?
Families usually arrange it in the early years, often within the first year or on a day advised for that nakshatra. The day is chosen together.
Do both parents need to be there?
Both usually sit with the child for the sankalp. If one cannot come, mention it while fixing the date.
