Navchandi Yagya

नवचंडी यज्ञ

About this puja

Navchandi is a Devi anushthan built on nine paths of the Durga Saptashati, read by a group of purohits with the Kalash and the Devi established before them.

A havan with the dashansh ahuti follows the paths, then kumari pujan and Devi aarti, and families often close it with bhojan or daan. How many purohits sit depends on how many paths are to be read in a day.

It needs a hall, or a house in Nashik or Trimbakeshwar with room for the havan kund and the purohits.

When families perform it

  • During Navratri, in Chaitra or in Ashwin.
  • As a family anushthan kept on a vowed day.
  • At the opening of a new house or a new business, where the family keeps the Devi.

On the day

  1. Sankalp and Ganesh pujan, then Kalash sthapana and Devi sthapana.

  2. Nine paths of the Durga Saptashati read by the purohits.

  3. Havan with the dashansh ahuti, kumari pujan, then Devi aarti.

Before you come

What to bring and wear

  • Name and gotra of the family speaking the sankalp
  • Red cloth, bangles and a sari for the Devi, if you would rather bring your own
  • How many people will attend, for the seating and the prasad

Common questions

Where is the yagya performed?

In a hall, or at the family's house where there is room for the havan kund and the purohits, in Nashik or in Trimbakeshwar. The place is decided together.

How is it different from Sat Chandi?

Navchandi has nine paths of the Saptashati and Sat Chandi has a hundred, so Sat Chandi needs more purohits and more days.
