Sat Chandi Yagya

शतचंडी यज्ञ

About this puja

Sat Chandi follows the same shape as Navchandi on a larger scale: a hundred paths of the Durga Saptashati, read by a group of purohits across several days.

Because of the number of paths it needs more purohits and more days than Navchandi, and the hall, the havan kund and the bhojan are planned with the family well before the dates.

It is held in a hall in Nashik or in Trimbakeshwar; a house is rarely large enough for it.

When families perform it

  • During Navratri, where a family keeps the larger anushthan.
  • As a sankalp a family has vowed to complete.
  • At the pratishtha of a Devi mandir or of a family shrine.

On the day

  1. First day: sankalp and Ganesh pujan, then Kalash sthapana and Devi sthapana.

  2. The hundred paths of the Saptashati read by the purohits, day by day.

  3. Last day: havan with the dashansh ahuti, kumari pujan, Devi aarti and daan.

Before you come

What to bring and wear

  • Name and gotra of the family speaking the sankalp
  • The dates you have in mind and the number of guests expected
  • Red cloth, bangles and a sari for the Devi, if you would rather bring your own

Common questions

How far ahead should this be planned?

Several weeks. A group of purohits has to be free on consecutive days and a suitable hall has to be arranged.

Can the family attend only part of it?

The family sits for the sankalp on the first day and for the havan and aarti on the last. Coming for the daily paths is up to them.
