Satyanarayan Puja

सत्यनारायण पूजा

About this puja

The Satyanarayan pujan is the household vidhi kept for Bhagwan Satyanarayan, a form of Vishnu. A chaurang is laid out, the Kalash is established, and the katha is read in its five adhyayas with the family seated through it.

Sheera is made and shared as prasad at the end with everyone who has come. It is one of the pujas most often kept in Maharashtrian households.

It is performed at the family’s house, flat, shop or office in Nashik. Nobody travels anywhere for it.

When families perform it

  • On a Purnima, and especially on Kartik or Vaishakh Purnima.
  • After a wedding, or when a new house or a new shop has been opened.
  • As a sankalp a family has kept to perform.

On the day

  1. Sankalp and Ganesh pujan at your address, then Kalash sthapana.

  2. Sthapana of Bhagwan Satyanarayan, then the katha read in its five adhyayas.

  3. Havan where the family wishes one, then aarti and the sheera prasad.

Before you come

What to bring and wear

  • Name and gotra of the husband and wife, or of whoever sits for the sankalp
  • The full address in Nashik and the time you would like to start
  • The saman and the sheera ingredients from the list sent on WhatsApp, or ask for them to be arranged

Common questions

Is a particular day needed for it?

Purnima is the day families most often keep, and Kartik and Vaishakh Purnima especially. It is also done on other days, and a suitable time can be settled on WhatsApp.

How many people can sit for it?

The husband and wife, or the head of the house, sit for the sankalp, and the rest of the family and any guests sit for the katha. Tell Guruji roughly how many will attend so the seating and the prasad can be planned.
